  • Highlander: The American Dream mini-series from IDW

    http://www.newsarama.com/34059-conno...n-dream-3.html

I've personally only read the first issue, but I'm wondering what the consensus is from others. How is this series coming along?

I've read the first two issues so far.
Had some doubts about the profession of Osta Vasilek but overall I think it's rather good.
It has all the right ingredients and the tone, art and setting match up pretty well.

Yeah, I've read the first three issues. I think it's coming along quite well! The writer is actually well-versed, at least, in the movie lore. The artist is very good and quite detail oriented. There is a mortal man stalking Connor, who may or may not really be aware that he's dealing with immortals. There are a couple of cases where statements made don't seem accurate to the situation, but since they are expressed as the opinion of a character, perhaps they are not that important.

I've no idea these were out. I don't know if I could go through the effort to hunt these down, but I'll think about it. That being said, I can't wait to read them.

I'll wait for the collected edition myself, but it looks rather promising.

(Unlike that awful mess, Highlander 3030, that never had a second issue btw, if I'm not mistaken...)

You're not mistaken about the second issue. But it wasn't an awful mess. Many people did their best to bring an original story but like other Highlander productions it encountered hard times and delays. Maybe some time in the future we'll see the script for issue #2. The winners of the contest to have their image 'immortalized' in the comics would most likely been placed in a big crowd scene in issue #3. That is all the info I can share.

Maybe a script. But I'm fairly certain their license with Davis is expired.

I may pick them up on Comixology. (I've already checked--they're available.) No rush. I'll probably wait for an IDW sale.

Though, if you want more Highlander comics to be greenlit, it all depends upon the sales figures now, not months later -- if sales aren't good enough with this series (which is very much a "canary-in-the-coal-mine" test balloon by IDW), we won't be seeing any more, period. So make sure you snag 'em as soon as possible!

Seriously, IS that a legal website? Does reading it there help to convince IDW that this comic is worth the expense?

No clue, but some people like to try before they buy.

Apparently, it is not a legal site.

^ But if you can get it for free, chances are you're simply going to decide to not spend the money on the actual physical issues, and right now the Highlander comics series needs every last sale it can get. There's a big difference between a legal 3-4 page preview and putting the entire issue up for free without permission.

Comixology is having a line-wide IDW sale right now. Everything is 55% off, so you can buy all 5 issues for $5.40.

Man, I need to get this. Probably a CHristmas buy, which should be fine.

                          It's definitely worth a read.

I finally read it, and it was... OK. Nothing offensively bad like Armageddon (half of which I don't even remember), but nothing spectacular either. Like most of IDW's run, is basically "there". Though if I had to be pressed hard, I'd say I like it less than most the comic stuff. The story simply started to get going near the end, and I thought the momentum was past it. The potential of a disgraced FBI agent who believes in Immortal conspiracies is never explored fully and Vazilek is too one-dimensional, despite efforts to flesh him out. And Houke is just not very interesting, at all. I kinda liked the artwork here though, and enjoyed it was different from before, even if Connor wasn't resembled as well, but that's a forgivable thing compared to the writing never really matching that character's sparse communicative demeanor.

So far, I will my favorite comic arcs have to be Way of the Sword and Origins: The Kurgan. The former because it had a complete story with really good artwork. The latter for exploring and visualizing a lot of stuff from the novelization, which is always a good thing (plus a cameo from Kane, to boot, hinting at a bromance!).

And even though I completely stand by my comments of The Kurgan not being even remotely the Star Wars equivelant of Star Wars' Darth Maul (an argument that never made sense, since Maul was an unknown threat whereas Kurgan was an established, millenia-lasting boogeyman, by ANY media, universe or any given writer), I can't help but wonder whether the lack of original villains for Highlander is such a difficult task to have. I don't mind the Kurgan in WOTS or TAD that much, but then again, would I miss him if I didn't see him? Is it that much to ask for a different, tangible threat for Connor beyond The Big Russian? I guess my issue is that Houke is himself yet another caricature of that persona, which harks back to what I said earlier.

Ah, well. Overall, its not a great story, or a barely consistent story. But its what we got.

If they deliver half-assed story-telling, people are hardly going to spend their hard-earned and sometimes desperately needed dollars on it. Hook was eye-rollingly annoying. Vasilek and his "I know him better than you." NO YOU DON'T! You friggin' only knew him for about 12 hours!!
