  • Any Babylon 5 fans here?

Watching the series again, it is my go to for comfort and escape when life goes sideways. Anyone else here love this series?

Yes, so sad. So many of the cast are gone now...

I used to love that show. Do you recall the episode done from the POV of two janitors? That was particularly clever.

Yes, that was a good one. I always wondered what that machine did too!

I have been lucky enough to meet several of the cast members. I was an extra in one of Stephan Furst's earlier films back in college. It was called Take Down. He played a high school wrestler on a team with Lorenzo Lamas and Shane Douglas. When I met him years later at a con in Boise he came up and asked me if we had met before. I was amazed that he had such a good memory for remembering an extra on a film set decades before. He laughed and asked me why I still looked the same twenty years later...no wrinkles or gray hair. I joked I was really immortal. His answer was...we have two immortal ladies in the B5 cast.

Fantastic series, and still one of my all-time favorite SF shows to this very day. Rewatched it last year, and it still holds up amazingly well...though it's barely exaggerating to say that half the cast have now died since I last went through it.

R.I.P. -- Vir was a great character, one of the hearts of the show, really, and Furst truly embodied the role.

Yeah, it is hard to believe how many of the cast have died. I have loved this show from the beginning. G`Kar and Vir were my two favorite characters...

I'm a B5er do or die. I was heartbroken when I heard about Jerry Doyle.

How apropos that this is my fifth post on the board. Coincidence, I swear.

Last year, I re-watched all of B5, Crusade, Lost Tales, the complete set of movies, and Legend of the Rangers. Its all awesome! More recently, I have been trying to find B5 graphic novels. I got one through interlibrary loan. It was printed while the TV show was still in production and told more of the back story of how Sinclair got involved with the Minbari. I requested another, but so far, it hasn't been found. I wish DC would reprint them!

Hi ~mj~. I assume your question was about B5 graphic novels. I think there were four that DC comics published. I found out about them through an internet search. I was able to read one of them after I requested it from my public library. They got it via a loan from a library in Texas (no cost to me!). I live in Indiana, so I was rather surprised.

You can also keep up on some of the actors. I have followed Claudia, Tracy and Jason on Facebook.

Introduced this show to some teens recently. Londo and Vir are big favorites among the wasn't around when this first aired set. Had to point out 8 year old Bill Mumy in 'Dear Brigitte' (recently on TCM) as 'Lennier.' I had never know he'd done a picture with James Stewart (not to mention Brigitte Bardot) until we saw that.

Hi ~mj~ long time no see And yes big B5 fan, I had the fortune of meeting the cast in the UK many years ago. Andreas Katsulas was not meant to be there, but he came on by surprise, dressed as a janitor mopping the floor behind the other cast. Nobody realised it was him, very funny.

Hey Dragosani! Yeah, Andreas was my favorite actor on the series. I loved the character G'Kar....

I am back to watching B5 once again. I will never stop loving that show! I keep hearing rumblings about bringing the B5 universe back in some form or another. I really hope it will happen!

A message from J. Michael Straczynski:

To answer all the questions, yes, it’s true, Babylon 5 is now in active development as a series for the CW. We have some serious fans over at the network, and they’re eager to see this show happen. I’m hip deep into writing the pilot now, and will be running the series upon pickup. The network understands the uniqueness of Babylon 5 and is giving me a great deal of latitude with the storytelling.

As noted in the announcement, this is a reboot from the ground up rather than a continuation, for several reasons. Heraclitus wrote, “You cannot step in the same river twice, for the river has changed, and you have changed.” In the years since B5, I’ve done a ton of other TV shows and movies, adding an equal number of tools to my toolbox, all of which I can bring to bear on the question: if I were creating Babylon 5 today, for the first time, knowing what I now know as a writer, what would it look like? How would it use all the storytelling tools and technological resources available in 2021 that were not on hand then? How can it be used to reflect the world in which we live, and the even questions we are asking and confronting every day? Fans regularly point out how prescient the show was and is of our current world; it would be fun to take a shot at looking further down the road.

So we will not be retelling the same story in the same way because of what Heraclitus said about the river. There would be no fun and no surprises. Better to go the way of Westworld or Battlestar Galactica where you take the original elements that are evergreens and put them in a blender with a ton of new, challenging ideas, to create something both fresh and familiar.

To those who have asked why we’re not just doing a continuation…for a network series like this, it can’t be done because over half our cast are still stubbornly on the other side of the Rim. How do you telling continuing story of our original Londo without the original Vir? Or G’Kar? How do you tell Sheridan’s story without Delenn? Or the story of B5 without Franklin? Garibaldi? Zack?

The original Babylon 5 was ridiculously innovative: the first to use CGI to create ships and characters, and among the very first to shoot widescreen with a vigorous 5.1 mix. Most of all, for the first time, Babylon 5 introduced viewers accustomed to episodic television to the concept of a five-year arc with a pre-planned beginning, middle and end…creating a brand new paradigm for television storytelling that has subsequently become the norm. That tradition for innovation will continue in this new iteration, and I hope to create additional new forms of storytelling that will further push the television medium to the edge of what’s possible.

Let me conclude by just saying how supportive and enthusiastic everyone at the CW has been and is being with this project, they understand the unique position Babylon 5 occupies both in television and with its legions of fans, and are doing everything they can to ensure the maximum in creative freedom, a new story that will bring in new viewers while honoring all that has come before.

Right now, the talk is of a pilot in 2023.

"Babylon 5: The Road Home is a 2023 American animated film produced by Warner Bros. Animation, animated by Studio Mir and distributed by Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment. The film was directed by Matt Peters, with a screenplay by original Babylon 5 franchise creator, J. Michael Straczynski."

I learned last week that this new B5 movie is out on DVD now. My library has a copy and I will see it soon. Some of the original cast have returned to voice their characters. I am excited!

From the original cast only Boxleintner, Christian, Carter, and Jurasik are even still alive, and Jurasik is firmly retired, but I loved his portrayal, and the accent he created for Lando - one of the saddest story arcs I ever saw, but so well done. Will have to find this movie.

                                  Hi Ceridwen,

I saw the movie and thought it was pretty good. Multiverse stories seem rather popular these days.

Original cast members: Bruce Boxleitner, Claudia Christian, Peter Jurasik, Bill Mumy, Tracy Scoggins, and Patricia Tallman all reprise their characters.

I re-watched the season 5 episode "Day of the Dead", and for the first time, discovered that the episode was written by Neil Gaiman! This episode, which I have always considered something of an oddball in the B5 universe, is one of my favorites. Now I know why. Neil is awesome!
