  • Government Shutdown?

Ok, yes, I am Canadian...how exactly does the shutdown occur? Why? How is this allowed to happen? What happens to the daily functions of the Government? Who is watering the plants? Inquiring minds want to know...

It doesn't really impact much on the day to day.

It does for the military...they don`t get paid. Not sure if it will mess up Gs retirement pay...if it does, we are screwed...

My understanding is that they do, the money is set aside.

A shutdown occurs when a budget cannot be approved by all the appropriate governing bodies, usually due to policy conflicts between parties involving the funding of certain programs. The result is the literal shutdown of all non-essential federal operations, such as museums and national parks, along with the temporary layoff of most hourly federal employees, as well as the secretarial staffs of elected officials. Elected officials, as well as non-secretarial staffs (such as the presidential senior staff), however, are supposed to stick around and continue to negotiate a budget. Once a budget can be approved by all required parties, the shutdown concludes, and things go back to normal.

Basically, this means a shutdown does very little to the day to day life of the average citizen, unless they are an hourly federal employee. Significant problems with them generally only occur if they last several weeks or months, as federal payouts can become back logged given the reduced staffs all federal operations are left with, preventing federal welfare and even military pay from being processed in a timely manner, though, such things rarely occur as shutdowns seldom last that long.

As for who is watering the plants? Well, likely no one.

Also keep in mind that the elected officials continued to be paid during the shutdown so they don't really care
