From what i've read there was some subtext to Highlander 3 which was not explicitly shown, for some reason. Perhaps it was left out on the editing room floor.
In Highlander 3, Kane has a katana with the iconic black demon Tsuka (carved by Jose C. De Braga). But he does not take care of his sword. After Kane kills Nakano, he is trapped in the cave with his minions, and while in waiting he has a chance to repair his sword. He removes his round tsuba, taking Nakano's hexagonal guard and his superior blade. After escaping, he is eager to test Nakano's sword which is why he kills his immortal companion.
Kane's circular tsuba is visible
Nakano's tsuba is a hexagonal pattern.
Kane examines his newly modified sword as he considers a way to test it's effectiveness.
