Spoiler Alert: Spider
http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-43996959
OK, so she isn't really trained, she was selected because she'd do it. Still awfully elegant. I can't figure out how she lands on her hind legs like that.“A sinner can always repent, but stupid is forever.”

I heard about Kim the jumping spider yesterday. She was the only spider subject to participate in the experiment. Perhaps she is more intelligent than the others? The video is interesting to watch. I wonder if by angling her body up during the jump, she might be getting some aerodynamic lift to help lengthen her jumps. Do we really want robots that can jump like her? It could make for more efficient Terminators!

Yes, if they were trying to draw inferences about spiders generally, Miss Kim wouldn't be very representative would she? I guess in this case, since they're looking at her mechanics, her compulsive jumping is OK.
Autonomous robots make me uncomfortable in any case. The four laws of robotics need a fifth law: robots cannot not edit laws one through four!“A sinner can always repent, but stupid is forever.”

Coolwater, I take it you are a fan of Asimov's robot stories. Me too! Unfortunately, I don't think Asimov's warnings are being heeded. A lot of the money for robot development is coming from the military. The first law: "A robot must not harm a human being", doesn't fit very well into military weapon's development parameters.

Here is a prosthetic arm with a built-in light, USB ports for charging, a smartwatch and even a little drone that perches on the shoulder. God bless the gamer engineers!

"...entropy is physically stored in soft hair..." Taking that literally, I believe it. I have fine, soft hair and when it gets staticky, it flutters all over my head. Completely ungovernable.
But, we're not talking real hair here, we're talking about the publication of Steven Hawking's last paper on Black Holes:

I used to work for a company that was bought out by Smithfield. It's really hard to get a bathroom break regardless of where you work on the production line. It doesn't help that you have to have a lab coat on over top of whatever you're wearing to keep from freezing and glovesGonna change my evil ways...one of these days
